Wide Open Spaces
Swift County is in the southwestern part of Minnesota, and is home to parks that offer hiking, swimming, playgrounds, picnic areas and other recreational activities. The Minnesota landscape offers prairie lands and forests, and lakes and streams for everyone to dig into and find their outdoors passion. There are even parks for off-road vehicle riders and horseback riders.
Glacial Lakes State Park
Glacial Lakes State Park showcases a prairie landscape and glacial hills. Look for the wildflowers and prairie grass. There are a number of different campsites including a main campsite, camper cabins and more remote sites, which you can hike or horseback ride to if you’re interested. There are picnic areas as well, or you can dine in any comfortable spot you find. You can also swim, canoe, kayak or boat on the lake (though there no motor boats allowed). Fishing in the lake is also an option.
Off-Highway Vehicle Park
The Appleton Area OHV Park has trails for all-terrain vehicles, off-road vehicles and off-highway motorcycles. There are trails ranging in difficulty from easiest (marked in green, like ski trails), more difficult (blue) and most difficult (black). There are 20 miles of trails–plenty of distance to entertain and challenge you all day. Nearby Appleton provides hotels, motels, restaurants, gas and any facilities you may need. Some of the trails are actually old railroad lines, and certain trails are only for certain vehicles, so be sure to check before you ride.
Sibley State Park
Sibley State Park has activities for the whole family and for the outdoorsy types. Made up of both forest area and prairie lands, there are campgrounds and picnic areas, as well as campsites that cater to equestrians. There are also programs, run by the park, and a group center. In addition, you can enjoy hiking in the forest and prairie lands, and fishing, canoeing and swimming in Lake Andrew. If you’re up for a longer canoe trip, you can canoe between three different lakes in the area–Andrew, Henschien and Swan.
