Stephanie Smith Moved to Swift County for Her Family and Career
Monday, November 25, 2019
As a young professional Stephanie Smith wanted a rewarding career - one that she would feel excited and passionate about. She found that in Swift County. Stephanie works for the University of Minnesota Extension Office in Swift County. She manages the day-to-day office functions of the Swift County Extension Office and provides support to 4-H and other related programs. “What I enjoy most about my job are the people and families I get to work with every day. I also really enjoy working with the local farmers,” she said.
For Stephanie, working in a rural community was a natural fit. “I grew up in a rural community and appreciated the work of local farmers and their families. I was excited by the opportunity to work for an organization that operates within the farming community and to help build a future for youth,” she said.
Originally, she started working at the Extension Office in Kandiyohi County, enjoying what the Extension and 4-H had to offer. After getting married, she moved to Swift County - where her husband is from. “I knew I wasn’t going to leave my job in Willmar until the perfect position opened for me. Two months later the office manager position in the Swift County Extension Office opened and it’s where I wanted to be,” she said.
One of the things that excited Stephanie about the position was the involvement she would have with the 4-H program. When asked what she enjoys about Swift County 4-H, she said, “Our 4-H program is filled with smart, innovative and hardworking students. My goal is to continue to help build the 4-H program and its experience for local families. Being located in a farming community provides us with tremendous opportunities and gives our youth a lot of hands-on experience - something that is unique to living in a rural community like Swift County.”
She encourages the community to continue supporting the 4-H program and to be involved in what students are doing. “The community can help local students by continuing to be supportive of Extension and our 4-H Program. We are so grateful for the amazing support we receive from the community!”
Since Stephanie is not originally from Swift County, we wanted to know about her experience moving here as a young professional. She found the community incredibly welcoming, something that made the move an easy and positive experience. “When I moved to Swift County, everyone was incredibly kind and welcoming to me. It quickly became home!” she said.
When asked why other young professionals should consider living and working in Swift County, she said, “The people! As a Swift County transplant, everyone has been incredibly kind and welcoming. I’ve loved building relationships with neighbors, my work family, business leaders and 4-H families. Another thing that I love about Swift County is its many small businesses. We’re lucky to have so many unique, thriving businesses in our community.”
If you are a recent college graduate, a young professional looking for career opportunities or anyone searching for a new home - we encourage you to consider Swift County and the many benefits that people like Stephanie have experienced by moving here.
